Despite the threatening weather (which actually stayed dry) and some important sporting events, there was an excellent turnout to the herbal walk. Christine gave an excellent insight into the uses of the wide range of common plants found along the roadside at Marlfield Lake. This covered everything from the food plants such as blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) and elder (Sambucus nigra), to the herbs such as meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) – useful for arthritis; ribwort plantain or soldiers (Plantago lanceolata) – useful for throat and chest complaints; yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – for fever associated e.g. with flu; and nettle (Urtica dioica) which has many uses; and lots more. It was amazing to learn about the vast resource we have all around us, and the different types of preparations such as teas and syrups. As mentioned on the walk, there are also some poisonous plants lurking out there, so only use what you’re sure of, and try a little bit at a time. Many thanks again to Marlfield Village for hosting this event, and to everyone who turned up on the day.

Biodiversity of South Tipperary, have your say!

Biodiversity is short for biological diversity and means the variety of all living things on earth, including all plants, animals and micro-organisms. Some other words that are used to describe biodiversity include: flora and fauna; wildlife; habitats; ecosystems; ecology, natural heritage or nature. It is the basis for all life and helps sustain us by providing food, pollination, medicines, raw materials, clean air and water, and beautiful countryside.

South Tipperary County Council Heritage Office is drawing up a Biodiversity Action Plan and needs your input to make it work. The five-year plan will include an overview of biodiversity in the county and actions to help look after it. Now more than ever we need to be thinking about what natural resources we have and how best to look after them.
